WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH THIS PICTURE??

This picture was one of the INKSPIRATIONS4U Challenges that was set a few weeks ago. Use this picture as an inspiration for a card.

It was a tricky one and I know it had me stumped for a bit. What would you do? Would you base it on the colours?? Use the shapes such as the swirls or circles or perhaps the stripes?? In the end I picked out some of the colours and I wanted to use circles in there somehow. Here is my end result.

I went with Crumb Cake, Chocolate Chip, Baja Breeze and Old Olive. I thought these colours would suit a masculine type card. I ran some Old Olive card through the Big Shot using the Square Lattice Embossing Folder and layered it on Chocolate Chip. I wrapped around some twine and adhered that to a Crumb Cake base. I punched out various circles with the 1″, 1 1/4″, 1 3/8″ circle punch. I added some eyelets to 3 of the circles. I adhered the circles in a formation with Snail or raising some with mounting tape. The greeting is stamped with Chocolate Chip and is from “Party This Way”. This was quite a fun card to do in the end.

FAUX WOOD!!

I’m back! Our new computer is up and running. I just need to get used to this new Windows 7 version. It’s a lot different, but it’s fast!

I have 2 more male cards to show you. These are done with the faux woodgrain effect. Have you tried this technique before? It is a fun thing to do and everytime you do it, the results are different. It’s a great manly technique. I’ll talk about the technique shortly. I will show you the cards first. These cards I made last year.

This is using the retiring ‘Wanted’ set again.

I have created the woodgrain and then mounted it on a Chocolate Chip base. I inked up the horses in Chocolate Chip and stamped them without reinking. It looks like wild horses running! I matted this on Chocolate Chip and adhered it to the card. I looped some twine and then adhered that with a glue dot. The greeting is from ‘Short and Sweet’. I punched that out with the Word Window punch and then layered that with a Chocolate Chip Word Window Punch out. I did stamp the inside with the paisley stamp onto Very Vanilla but I forgot to take a photo of that.

The other card is using ‘Owl Together Now’. I’m a bit sad I haven’t used this set has much as I thought. It is a very cute set.

I punched out a circle in the card with the 1 3/8″ circle punch. I stamped up a little owl with Old Olive Ink onto Very Vanilla card. I coloured just his wings with the So Saffron marker. I adhered that piece under the woodgrain card with mounting tape and wrapped some twine around it. Then mounted it all with mounting tape on a piece of Old Olive card. This was adhered to the Chocolate Chip card base. The greeting was from the set and punched out with the Large Oval punch. The edges were sponged with Old Olive and then layered on another Large Oval punched out in Old Olive. I offset them and adhered them with mounting tape again. This is very cute. It looks like the owl is peering out of his hole in the tree.

There are a lot of different versions of creating the woodgrain effect on the internet. I found a tutorial on Splitcoast here. I did mine on Very Vanilla card. I used Creamy Caramel, More Mustard and Chocolate Chip inks. A couple of tips I found:

– When you swipe your inkpad down the card, start off the edge of the card and try to run down in one movement. It doesn’t matter too much, but you get lines across the card where you stop. That just adds to the character of the wood effect though. Lay the inkpad flat to swipe down.

– Make your card piece a little larger than you want. You tend to get a dark edge, so you can trim it down.

– After I used the 3 colours (starting from the lightest first), I rubbed over parts of the card with white ink with a sponge (rubbing rather than dabbing). Just apply lightly. It might help sponging off on scrap paper first.

– After using the white ink, you can always touch up the card by sponging (rubbing) on the 3 ink colours you have used until you are happy with the result. That is, you might want to add a little more golden colour then sponge on more ‘More Mustard’, or if you want it darker sponge on more ‘Chocolate Chip’.

I was going to do up a tutorial for this, but I think the one on Splitcoast is simple to follow. I found it a bit hard to swipe ink with one hand while taking a photo!!!! Here is a sample piece I created while doing this though.

The card was curled up a bit that’s why it looks crooked. Sorry about that 🙂

OUT WITH THE OLD!!!

I was going through some of my cards recently and realised that I hadn’t shown you some cards that I had made. Some of these are with some retiring stamp sets. So, I better show you before they are gone for good!

This one is with the stampset “Wanted”. I borrowed this set last year to make some masculine type cards.

I inked up the horse in Night of Navy and stamped 3 times without reinking. The third horse is a little faint in the photo. I took several photos but it just wasn’t coming out clearly!! I stamped the other images randomly in Night of Navy ink onto Bordering Blue card (a retiring colour). The white was matted onto Really Rust cardstock (another retiring colour). I wrapped some twine around and layered it all onto the Night of Navy card base – which is a bit hard to tell too. The weather is a bit overcast so it is hard to get some clearer photos!!

The greeting is from “A Little Birthday Cheer”, which is another retiring set. I used the Really Rust marker on just the Celebrate stamp and stamped it onto Whisper White card and punched out with the Large oval punch. I sponged the edge and put a staple through it. This was raised and layered onto a Really Rust Wide Oval. I inked up the star and punched it out with the small star punch. I don’t know why this punch is retiring???? I added a silver brad and raised it up with mounting tape.

I stamped the inside too.

Mind you, it does have a straight edge IRL!!!! Not my day for photos today! I didn’t add a greeting on the inside at the time. That can be added when I give it away. I adhered a piece of Whisper White onto the Night of Navy base. On a strip of Bordering Blue I stamped the small shapes in Night of Navy and added this to the bottom.

I created another card with this set when I had it. On this one I did the faux woodgrain. So pop by in the next few days to see that. For now, I have a million things I should be doing!

FAMILY STAMPING!!!

On Tuesday I had a family holiday stamping time with my MIL, SIL and her friend, and niece Megan (Hi Megan!!!). I wanted to show you what we did. I used the SU ‘Lovely as a Tree’. I don’t have this set but I borrowed it and had a lot of fun!!

For the first card I wanted a masculine type card. On the Choc Chip base card I stamped the leaf randomly over the card with Choc Chip inkpad. I stamped the large pine tree in Choc Chip onto Very Vanilla and then without reinking stamped it again to the right of it. Then I inked it up again and stamped it off on scrap paper and then stamped it to the right of the first one. I tore the bottom edge and then distressed and inked the edges in Choc Chip. I adhered this to Certain Celery cardstock. On the Certain Celery mat I had distressed the edges and inked them with Choc Chip also. I stamped on Happy Birthday from ‘A Little Birthday Cheer’ Set. I adhered both of these to the Choc Chip base. I stamped off 2 leaves onto scrap Vanilla card and then cut them out and mounted them with dimensionals. It is a very simple card.

The second card was based on the very talented Michelle Zindorf. Check out her blog she does some awesome work. I stamped the trees in Basic Black. I punched a circle in a post-it note with the 1 3/8″ circle and stuck it on to create a mask. I then sponged around the trees with Baja Breeze, then Night of Navy and Black right on the edge. The grass was sponged with Old Olive and then the gone over with the Old Olive Marker at the grass line. The sentiment is from ‘Short and Sweet’ stamped in black. It was then mounted on Black and then Old Olive.
